While the most notable projects halted by the recession began rising last year, most of the stragglers are now catching up as well, and that group includes the future 610 Lexington Avenue. Located on the corner of Lexington and 53rd Street, the building will soon stand 65 stories and 711 feet tall.
Excavation work began earlier this year, and the hole in the ground quickly reached bedrock bottom, with that part of the construction process now complete. Foundation work is now progressing quickly, and the site has become dominated by rebar and concrete.
Aby Rosen’s RFR Realty and Hines are developing, and Foster + Partners is the design architect; SLCE is the architect of record. Foster has several prominent residential towers in the works, including 50 UN Plaza and 551 West 21st Street, but 610 Lexington Avenue will be the tallest of the bunch. Just a few blocks to the northwest, Foster is also helming the redevelopment of 425 Park Avenue.
Compared to its siblings on the Hudson and East Rivers, 610 Lexington will be relatively tame; the tower’s form will be simplistic and rectangular, defined by sheer height and extreme slenderness. The bulk of the skyscraper will front 53rd Street, with a relatively diminutive base rounding out the project’s visual impact on Lexington Avenue.
Completion of 610 Lexington is expected by the winter of 2017, and above the 25,000 square feet of retail, 91 condominiums will divide 250,000 square feet of space.
