The growing Orthodox population in northern Bed-Stuy needs more schools and daycares, and one South Williamsburg-based program is building a new location south of the Brooklyn Navy Yard to fill that need.
The Williamsburg Infant and Early Childhood Development Center has filed plans for a six-story building at 430 Park Avenue. It would serve babies younger than six months and children from the ages of two to six, according to the filing. The development would rise on a large empty lot between Kent and Franklin avenues, at the edge of Bed-Stuy’s industrial zone.
The city has allowed some residential construction along Park Avenue, but this area is mostly populated by warehouses and factories. Zoning doesn’t permit residential construction here without a variance or rezoning, but most community facility uses, like churches, synagogues, schools, hospitals, and homeless shelters, are allowed as of right.
430 Park Avenue would hold 49,216 square feet of community facility space. The first floor would have a lobby, reception, laundry room, and classrooms, and classrooms and play areas would occupy most of the next four floors. There would also be a food prep area on each floor, and the second and fourth stories would offer outdoor terraces. The top floor would be devoted to staff and include offices, a lounge, conference rooms, and a terrace. And a pool, changing room, and kitchen would fill the cellar.
Kutnicki Bernstein Architects will design the project.
The day care picked up the 10,370-square-foot site for $2,050,000 back in 2008.
