Gene Kaufman’s creations are normally seen within the realm of hospitality development, but sometimes, the architect also designs residential buildings. Today, YIMBY has a fresh rendering for the firm’s project under construction at 1050 Sixth Avenue, and the latest photos from Tectonic show that the building is about to top out.

As YIMBY reported back at the very end of 2014 when building applications were filed, the tower will rise 24 floors and 283 feet to its rooftop. Unlike the hotels Kaufman is renowned for, this project will offer rather impressive ceiling heights of about 12 feet per floor.

The building will have a total construction area of 56,784 square feet, which will be divided amongst 61 units. At an average size of over 930 square feet, and considering the expansive ceilings, condos appear to be a bit more likely than rentals at the moment.

The site is being developed by Leonard Wilf of Garden Homes, and with condos possible, evidently the budget was substantial enough for Kaufman to design something that will be attractive, unlike the usual hotels. The balconies on the top floors will be a bit distracting, but besides those, the envelope of the building will be flush with the sidewalk, and the exterior will feature a neutral palette with large windows.

1050 Sixth Avenue will rise between 39th and 40th Streets on the east side of Sixth Avenue, in an area that normally sees hotel developments. However, recent years have also given rise to the David Chipperfield-designed 16 West 40th Street, aka The Bryant, which certainly hasn’t hurt the area’s potential for new residential construction.

On-site signage indicates the project is expected to be finished by the end of next year, and with construction almost topped-out, that estimate appears to be accurate.
