Barnard College announced plans to build a new 11-story library and academic center to replace the existing Lehman Hall back in 2014, estimating the project would cost $150 million. YIMBY reported on permit filings for 40 Claremont Avenue back in October of 2015, and now, construction is just about complete on the attractive new building, as seen in the latest from Tectonic.

Two years later, construction is moving along quickly for the Cheryl and Philip Milstein Teaching and Learning Center. Photos show the paneling and windows that make up the façade are just about finished. The elevator lift is still attached, and the interiors remain incomplete as of now.

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, i.e. SOM, are responsible for the 189,000 square foot building’s design. The tower will align in height with its neighbor, Altschul Hall. Barnard wanted to retain the sensibilities of the neighborhood, opting not to utilize their air rights to construct as high as 44 stories.
The center will include a library that incorporates modern technologies, and there will also be a green space. The new structure is double what Lehman Hall had provided, allowing for new classrooms, conference rooms, science centers, teaching laboratories, and a small café.

The estimated completion date is August of 2018, in time to service next year’s fall semester. The development is expected to receive an LEED-Silver rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.
