The Upper West Side isn’t home to much new development, but that hasn’t stopped the rise of 1865 Broadway, the most substantial structure currently nearing completion in the neighborhood. Now, the 33-story residential tower is finally starting to see its SOM-designed concrete paneling installed along the lower floors, and the result is proving an increasingly attractive addition to the cityscape.

When we last reported on the site, plastic-covered glass had reached no higher than the six-story podium. Now, the actual facade paneling is visible, with just 20 floors left to rise before the full exterior is covered.

The 416-foot tall tower yields 34,000 square feet of retail space on the lower levels, along with 236,530 square feet of residential space up above. 160 apartments will be created, averaging nearly 1,500 square feet apiece.
1865 Broadway will include rentals alongside condominiums. Units looking over Broadway will benefit from the thoroughfare’s wide footprint, giving views more expansive than the average building, especially toward Midtown.

AvalonBay is responsible for the development. The building is expected to open by 2019.

The facade is plastic, not concrete. The workmen held each piece in one hand as they installed the shiny pieces of beige plastic!
