The Christian Cultural Center has partnered with Gotham Industries to develop a new affordable housing complex that is poised to drastically enliven and invigorate the surrounding East New York community.
The new buildings will rise from a large vacant parking lot on the church’s existing campus. The 2,100 planned apartments will be reserved for low and middle income families and individuals. The complex also includes housing for senior citizens.
Community facilities will include a performing arts center, 24-hour child care facilities, a fresh food grocery store, vocational training services, walk-in medical services, recreational athletic space, and retail. Both residents and the public will have access to more that two acres of outdoor areas.
To facilitate access to public transportation, the development will also introduce a new shuttle service from the complex to the L and 3 trains.
The complex and site plan are being designed by Vishaan Chakrabarti from the Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU).
“When we traditionally think about infrastructure, it’s transportation and utilities. Today, we know that for a community to succeed it needs access to a broader infrastructure of opportunity – open space, education, health care, child care, social opportunities and culture. Each of these things is considered in the plan that we have prepared with Gotham to advance Rev. Bernard’s vision for a sustainable and equitable community,” said Vishaan Chakrabarti, FAIA, Founder of PAU.
