Just after 9pm on Thursday evening, an explosion occurred at a power plant in Astoria resulting in a glowing blue sky, which some have now dubbed the Astoria Borealis. According to NYPD, the flash of blue light was a result of an apparent transformer explosion at a Con Edison substation facility.

No injuries or damage have been reported. The utility company reported the explosion caused a transmission dip in the area after the fire involving some electrical transformers. The power outage closed La Guardia airport, temporarily grounding planes.

Aurora Astorialis would be more appropriate. “Aurora” refers to the lights; “Borealis” means Northern. There are also the Southern Lights (Aurora Australis).
