On September 19, Covenant House broke ground on its first supportive housing development in 47 years. Located at 460 West 41st Street in Midtown West, the 80,000-square-foot facility is designed by FXCollaborative. According to permits filed last year, the structure will stand 164 feet tall and contain 80,290 square feet, with 53,053 square feet dedicated to community facility space. The building should also comprise 60 units averaging approximately 884 square feet.
New renderings of the project reveal a through-block property with frontage on both 40th and 41st streets. Clad in light-colored brick masonry, the building features setbacks from both streets topped with landscaped terraces. On the 41st Street façade, the lower portion of the building features long, wide windows that span the majority of the first four floors below the setback, while the upper levels feature a more regular grid of windows. The 40th Street frontage has a deep setback above the first story, with an irregular pattern of windows adorning the main elevation.
Few details are available regarding interiors of the new building or construction timeline.
Founded in 1972, Covenant House is the largest privately funded agency in the Americas focused on providing assistance to young homeless populations. The organizations latest development in Midtown arrives as part of the Take Notice NYC campaign to provide supportive housing around the city.
The project team includes for-profit entities Gotham Organization and Denham Wolf Real Estate Services.
“For over four decades, youth overcoming homelessness in New York City have found safety and shelter from the streets at Covenant House,” said Sister Nancy Downing, executive director of Covenant House New York. “Now, for the first time in our history, we’ll be designing a new residential facility to address all of the specific needs of our youth, allowing us to provide robust services and coordinated care, expanding the scope of our work and the number of young people that we can serve.”
The groundbreaking event was attended by New York City and State officials, Covenant House board member and six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald, and Denham Wolf co-founder Paul Wolf.

A good thing..GB Covenant House.
This is the type of development we should celebrate most.
Wish it could be 60 stories taller!
