Exterior Hoist Comes Down for Virgin Hotel at 1225 Broadway, in NoMad

Façade work is nearing completion on the Virgin Hotel at 1225 Broadway in NoMad. Designed by Stantec and developed by Lam Group, the 38-story, 476-foot-tall structure will yield 300,000 square feet with 460 hotel rooms. Sir Richard Branson of Virgin Group will be in charge of managing the property, which is the first Virgin Hotel in New York City.

Recent photos from Tectonic show the majority of the structure clad in its glass curtain wall, with only some portions of the lower and upper floors awaiting completion. Exterior progress has been minimal since YIMBY’s last update in January, with the most significant change being the disassembly of the exterior hoist and the installation of the façade where it once stood. Much of the envelope around the crown appears to be at the same stage of progress as four months ago, while the steel podium shows some additional structure assembly. This lower section will likely be the final part of the edifice to be enclosed.

The base of the building will house the main lobby and 90,000 square feet of retail space, with an underground 22,000-square-foot golf store called Swingers: A Crazy Golf Club. An outdoor swimming pool for guests will sit on top of the podium.

Located at the intersection of Broadway and West 30th Street, 1225 Broadway is two blocks away from the R and W trains at the 28th Street station. The B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, W, and PATH trains are also nearby at the Herald Square station. Pennsylvania Station is less than ten minutes away to the west, with additional access to the A, C, E, 1, 2, and 3 trains.

A revised completion date for the Virgin Hotels hasn’t been announced yet, though it’s safe to estimate sometime in 2021.

Again, the Virgin Hotel in NYC was designed by VOA Architecture, a firm that Stantec purchased after construction had commenced. I wish you’d, at least, give equal attribution

We at the 29th Street Neighborhood Association — joined by every elected official except the mayor — and preservation groups citywide tried HARD for years to save the irreplaceable and far-superior Demarest Building. That gorgeous 1890 building by James Renwick (see St. Patrick’s and the Smithsonian among other masterpieces) also housed the first electric elevator in the world, which I’m sure was more interesting than the rendered elevator. And yes, we tried to have the building used as a base for a tower. Most likely this designation-worthy building will be a vacant lot for years like the vacant lot a block south on 32nd Street that once housed the beaux arts Kaskel Building, demolished four years ago…for what?
