This month, the 92nd Street Y kicked-off a multi-phase redevelopment of its historic headquarters on the Upper East Side, Manhattan. Located at 1395 Lexington Ave at the corner of East 92nd Street, the $200 million restoration project will help the organization enrich the services, events, and facilities it provides to its visitors and the local Manhattan community.
As part of the project, the organization has also rebranded as 92nd Street Y, New York – 92NY, for short.
Founded in 1874 as the Young Men’s Hebrew Association, 92NY has evolved to provide a mix of cultural and community-oriented programming that includes live music, dance performances, lectures and conferences, film screenings, professional development programs, and more.

Led by New York design studio Beyer Blinder Belle, the project’s first phase focuses on the historic Buttenweiser Hall, a 252-seat performance venue. Scope of work will include the restoration of the venue’s ornate ceiling, the installation of a new sprung floor, wall finishes, and window treatments. To improve the visitor experience the space will also receive a new retractable stage, updated seating, modern house and theatrical lighting, upgrades to the AV system, and a new HVAC system.
There will also be significant improvements to 92NY’s May Center gym, which today houses a gymnasium, a gymnastics studio, private fitness studios, a “cardio court,” and a 75-foot-long indoor lap pool. Facility upgrades will include a new men’s locker room complete with 50 boys’ lockers, 200 day lockers, and 300 rentable lockers.

Construction costs for phase one are valued at $24 million. According to 92NY representatives, phase one is fully funded.
