Genovese Family Life Center, a social services provider in Jamaica, Queens, reopened this week following an extensive renovation project designed by Spacesmith. Located at 89-30 161st Street, the property is owned and operated by SCO Family of Services, an organization that assists people facing significant life challenges with a focus on education, family support, housing, youth justice services, people with developmental disabilities, and community wellness.
Today, the 30,000-square-foot center features a spatial layout, acoustic design, and a trauma-informed material palette designed to foster a sense of welcome and comfort for visitors and patients. On-site facilities include a medical clinic, exam rooms, nurse practitioner and doctor offices, and a phlebotomy lab. The first floor also offers a foster care visiting room. The upper levels have a second reception area, rooms for mental health counseling, and flexible meeting space for staff.
“This project brings together the best of trauma-informed design with innovative, flexible administrative space that will support our organization well into the future,” said SCO president and CEO Keith Little. “Every detail of this new space will have a meaningful impact on our clients and staff, while realizing financial efficiencies in the process.”

Is this connected with Kitty Genovese? When she was stabbed to death outside her Queens apartment house in 1964, supposedly upwards of 38 people witnessed her murder, yet failed to intervene, known in psychology as the ‘Genovese Effect’
No relation, likely the Genovee is related to the Pharmacy chan and not the 1964 victom (nor the mob family of the same name). In fact the “Genovese Effect” has subsequently been proven to be pretty much false, but it gained great visibilty due to extreamly biased reporting on the murder by the NY Times in its day.
