Sculpture Honoring Notorious B.I.G. Unveiled Near the Brooklyn Bridge in DUMBO, Brooklyn

The DUMBO Improvement District and the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership have unveiled a new public sculpture honoring late musician Christopher Wallace, more commonly known as The Notorious B.I.G. From artist Sherwin Banfield, the new sculpture is titled Sky’s the Limit in the County of Kings and sits on the northeast corner of Prospect and Washington Streets near the entrance of the Brooklyn Bridge in DUMBO.

“’It was all a dream,’ the opening lyric from The Notorious B.I.G.’s hit track ‘Juicy,’ exemplifies my dream of creating this monument,” said Banfield. “Delivering this project means so much to me personally, my story and artistic development as well as countless fans of hip-hop culture who continue to be positively affected and influenced by the communal experiences and sonic frequencies of B.I.G.’s artistry.”

The sculpture comprises a bronze bust of the musician with a stainless steel crown and sheathed shoulders. Two outstretched hands near the middle hold a symbolic bronzed heart and a microphone.

Surrounding the sculpture is an information panel that highlights Wallace’s achievements and living legacy in art, as well as the local Brooklyn community where he was born.

“The Notorious B.I.G. has had a profound impact on the music industry and there is no better way to honor his legacy than with Sherwin’s tribute,” said Regina Myer, president of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. “Located at one of Brooklyn’s most iconic locations—the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge—this installation will allow New Yorkers and visitors to explore how B.I.G.’s native city shaped his artistry.”
