Manhattan’s Garment District is the latest neighborhood to receive an award from the NY Forward program, a state-funded initiative that supports strategic revitalization plans across New York. The $4.5 million award will specifically support local efforts to create a robust economic district with attractive investment opportunities, engaging public spaces, and improved public safety.
In the next weeks, a Local Planning Committee comprised of municipal representatives, community leaders, and other stakeholders will convene to develop formal Strategic Investment Plans. With the help of private sector experts and state planners, the committee will identify proposed projects that align with the community’s vision for a new and improved Garment District.
Funding will be awarded for selected projects from the Strategic Investment Plan that have the greatest potential to jumpstart revitalization and generate new opportunities for long-term growth.
“We are weaving a collaborative future for industry, transportation, and tourism in the Garment District,” Governor Hochul said. “I am proud to announce the Garment District as one of New York City region winners of $4.5 million in NY Forward funding. This investment will enhance the fashion capital of the world with placemaking and public realm improvements that will guide the way through the district’s next century.”
NY Forward is a central component of the state’s economic development efforts to accelerate and expand the revitalization of downtown and commercial corridors. The Department of State has also provided enhanced technical support to awarded communities with less internal capacity. Awarded projects must include building renovation and redevelopment, the creation or improvement of public spaces, or a project that elevates an area’s cultural or historic qualities.
“NY Forward is making strategic investments in communities like the Garment District to help realize their full potential,” said Secretary of State Robert J. Rodriguez. “With this funding, the Garment District will work to achieve its community-driven vision to transform this iconic neighborhood that was once primarily dedicated to manufacturing into a bustling center of activity throughout the entire day to continue attracting new residents and visitors for decades to come.”

They could start with revising the building code to prevent these horrible setback hotel outcomes. That has exponentially more negative impact in the neighborhood.

Most of all, they need to maintain the small businesses related to the garment/fashion industry in this area and help them to thrive. Losing this important part of Manhattan’s economic history to more office and housing would be an unforgivable mistake.
With Hochul involved, I’m betting the plan is to help out big developers tear it all down.
