Permits have been filed to construct a new 15-story building that will accommodate a jail with accessory parking, loading support spaces, and community space where the Brooklyn Detention Complex once stood in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. Located between Smith Street and Boerum Place at 275 Atlantic Avenue, the lot is within walking distance of numerous trains including the A, C, F, R, 2, 3, 4, and 5. NYC Department of Design and Construction is listed as the owner behind the applications.
The proposed 339-foot-tall development will yield 712,150 square feet, with 682,150 square feet designated for commercial space and 30,000 square feet for community facility space. The steel-based structure will also have two cellar levels, two loading berths, and 100 enclosed parking spaces.
James Christerson of HOK is listed as the architect of record.
Demolition began last year after the detention center closed in 2020. An estimated completion date has not been announced.

By whose reckoning is a jail “commercial space”?
Closing Rikers can’t happen soon enough. I’m hopeful employees will be retrained or replaced if needed, and the new prison follows more enlightened incarceration that doesn’t create new criminals. American medieval retribution must change.
Oh I didn’t realize they were replacing the jail with a better jail. But if we want to shut down Rikers, which we must, then that makes sense. Why not 30-40 stories in that case though? Might as well, haters gonna hate anyway.
I speculate that each “floor” is actually a two-level cell block as is common practice in other jails and prisons. So if 15 floors is really 30+ including levels that are non-jail levels we are seeing a height more in line with what is stated.
