Permits have been filed for an 11-story mixed-use building at 96 Saint Edwards Street in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Located between Myrtle Avenue and Park Avenue, the lot is closest to the Dekalb Avenue subway station, serviced by the B, Q, and R trains. Westhab Inc. is listed as the owner behind the applications.

The proposed 115-foot-tall development will yield 66,837 square feet, with 35,629 square feet designated for community facility space and 31,208 square feet for residential space. The building will have 105 supportive housing units, with an average unit scope of 297 square feet. The concrete-based structure will also have a cellar.

Aufgang Architects is listed as the architect of record.

Demolition permits will likely not be needed as the lot is vacant. An estimated completion date has not been announced.

  1. Where exactly is this building going to go? Surely it’s not going to be shoehorned in front of the church and the nycha building.

  2. That beautiful church is gone forever so sad that we are losing precious buildings.

  3. The lot is most definitely NOT vacant. The church is still standing. The Brooklyn RC Diocese shamefully let the building deteriorate, and then sold the property. The church will need to be demolished. Once again, YIMBY fails in the basic facts of the matter. Sometimes I think I read YIMBY just to see what asinine scribblings their interns come up – at least I hope that they’re interns and no one is getting paid for this.

I’m no fan of the RCC but that church has been ringed by 3-4 thousand public housing units for 80 years. I cannot believe it remained in operation as long as it did and am near certain it operated at a loss as an outreach. At one time New York had established a goal of replacing large 100% public housing complexes with mixed income developments. Being as this is adjacent to downtown Brooklyn the concept should have worked here and probably would have supported reuse of what I agree was once a beautiful Gothic Revival church.

  5. 297sqf/27m² isn’t that small. My appartment is about that size and it fits a bath incl. tub and W/D unit and a small kitchenette in the living/sleeping room. You won’t be able to do yoga, but one can live quite comfortably with so much/less space.

  6. is this old? there is already a new building going up there – i believe intended to be a shelter.

297 Square feet for an apt? Maybe a walk in closet.
