Construction is progressing on a six-story charter school from Success Academy at 586 River Avenue in Concourse Village, The Bronx. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the 127-foot-tall structure will yield 302,032 square feet and include classrooms, lecture halls, a gym, and multiple terraces, among other features, and is designed to serve 2,400 children from kindergarten to 12th grade. The property is alternately addressed as 101 East 150th Street and is bound by River and Gerard Avenues and East 150th Street.
Recent photographs show the steel-framed superstructure of the main six-story building topped out along the northern end of the parcel and crews in the process of framing out its exterior with metal studs and insulation boards.
Excavation and foundations are also moving along on the southern end of the site, where the low-rise portion of the facility will stand. The steel superstructure will eventually be built laterally over this area and extend all the way to East 150th Street.
The rendering in the main photo looks east from River Avenue at a set of staircases leading up to the charter school, which is shown clad in an iridescent blue-green brick façade. It’s unclear whether this choice of materials will extend to the remainder of the development. The property is also shown surrounded by trees, with additional greenery present on a rooftop terrace.
No new renderings have been revealed since our last update in October 2023, when excavation and piling work was still underway.
Success Academy purchased the property in early 2022 for $105 million from MADDD Equities. The project required a rezoning of the site from manufacturing to academic use, along with the demolition of the two-story self-storage facility and New York City Children’s Center that formerly occupied it.
Success Academy currently operates eight schools in The Bronx with a total of 53 schools across New York City. Its latest location at 586 River Avenue is expected to enroll 80 percent of its student body with residents originating from The Bronx, according to Cathleen Sims, head of policy and external affairs at Success Academy.
The building’s programming will be structured as follows: classrooms, lecture halls, and a gym on the ground floor; a cafeteria, conference rooms, classrooms, and a terrace on the second floor; classrooms on the third floor; a cafeteria, nurse’s suite, and classrooms on the fourth floor; classrooms, a dance studio, terraces, and cafeteria on the fifth floor; and additional classroom space on the six floor.
The nearest subways from the development are the 2, 4, and 5 trains at the 149th Street-Grand Concourse station.
586 River Avenue’s anticipated completion date is slated for spring 2026, as noted on site.

Getting SOM to design this must have cost millions.
SOM may be more famous for its high-rise design, but the project is nothing to be ashamed of: Thanks.
The DeMatteis Organization has posted a more full rendering. It is on their website, under “projects,” then “educational.”
