The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has broken ground on the redevelopment of Pier 6 at the MADE Bush Terminal in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The $25 million project will transform the 5-acre pier into a public waterfront space, integrating green space, historic preservation, and resilient infrastructure. Design work is being led by Arcadis, Matrix New World, SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC, Sam Schwartz Engineering, Johnson & Asberry, and JK Muir. The MADE Bush Terminal, which was unveiled in November 2024, serves as a hub for manufacturers, artisans, designers, and entrepreneurs.

Plans for Pier 6 include stabilizing its deteriorating structure, reusing historic industrial materials where possible, and preserving existing plant and wildlife habitats. Redevelopment work will also open waterfront access to the community for the first time in decades. Completion is expected in 2027, with opportunities for water-based recreation and education programs to be announced in the coming months.

The Sunset Park District spans four industrial campuses: the Brooklyn Army Terminal, South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT), MADE Bush Terminal, and the Brooklyn Wholesale Meat Market. Recent district milestones include the launch of BATWorks, a climate innovation hub, groundbreaking on one of the nation’s largest offshore wind port facilities at SBMT, and the opening of MADE Building A, offering 170,000 square feet of industrial and community space.

Pier 6 is adjacent to Bush Terminal Piers Park and is accessible via nearby transit, including the D, N, and R trains at 36th Street station, and the R train at 45th Street station.

“With today’s exciting groundbreaking, the Harbor of the Future marches forward, with Sunset Park serving as a center of community investment, innovation, and jobs of the future,” said Adolfo Carrión Jr., Deputy Mayor for Housing, Economic Development, and Workforce. “The vision for Pier 6, which starts being built today, will deliver transformative, public, open green space, connect more New Yorkers to the water, and strengthen the overall district as a center for jobs and opportunity.”

There must be more than one Pier 6 as there’s already a Pier 6 park at Atlantic Ave.
This pier is at 42nd Street. Hopefully a more natural shoreline can be created to help sea life but plastic garbage will be a problem as it already is.

I’m thankful this redevelopment is happening. Also noteworthy that the budget is $25 million compared with the quarter billion plus needed to restore the smaller Battery City Park. That congestion pricing must have done it, it couldn’t have been fingers in the till.

  3. Years ago I worked at bat in the POST OFFICE,it was great to work there.Im glad to hear that it will turn into a great place
