Work is finished on the renovation of three basketball courts at Fish Playground in Ocean Hill, Brooklyn. Funded by the Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation’s Social Justice Fund through NYC Parks’ Adopt-A-Park program, the project delivers new playing surfaces, backboards with nets, benches, and a drinking fountain across the court complex, along with a refurbished perimeter fence. The work is part of a $2.89 million initiative to upgrade 13 basketball courts across five Brooklyn parks.
All three courts have been repaved and finished in a gray, black, and seafoam green palette, and fitted with new backboards and nets. New benches line the courts for players and spectators, and the existing chain-link fence was refurbished with new mesh, preserving sightlines into the park while keeping wayward basketballs from bouncing into the street.
Fish Playground opened in 1965 and is jointly operated by NYC Parks and the Department of Education. The playground derives its name from the streets that bound it: Fulton Street, Saratoga Avenue, and Herkimer Street.
Beyond Fish Playground, the Social Justice Fund has sponsored basketball court renovations at Jackie Robinson Playground in Crown Heights, Breukelen Ballfields in East New York, Fox Playground in Flatlands, and Sunset Park. Together, the projects have upgraded 13 courts across the five parks. The sites were selected in consultation with NYC Parks as part of the fund’s racial justice initiative, which targets Brooklyn neighborhoods experiencing acute levels of gun violence.
