New buildings and alterations are sprouting on every underused plot near Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights, and YIMBY noticed that this long-delayed revamp at 609 St Johns Place is finally nearing the finish line.
A year ago, this building between Franklin and Classon Avenues was a vacant three-story brick apartment building. Now it has an extra story, a horizontal addition and a completely new exterior, which appears to be made of facade panels mimicking white brick.
Once the renovation finishes, it will have 13 units divided across 9,787 square feet of residential space, for an average, rental-sized apartment of 752 square feet. The updated apartment building will also include six off-street parking spots in the rear yard, 10 bike storage spaces and laundry in the cellar, and a roof deck.
John Emergi is the owner, doing business as an LLC headquartered in Hollis, Queens, and engineer Yaakov Stern is the applicant of record on the permits.

Construction began last spring and appears to be progressing nicely. The windows and facade have been installed, and interior work was underway when we stopped by.
The new look is reasonably attractive compared to other new construction in Crown Heights. It brings fresh blood to a very eclectic block that’s split in two by the shuttle train tracks and lined with a combination of 19th century townhouses, early 20th century row houses, a senior housing complex and a large parking garage.
