The Portzamparc-designed 400 Park Avenue South is now progressing at a regular pace, and the future 42-story tower has reached its seventh floor. The notches for the future subway station entrance – which is carved out of the building’s northeast corner – are now visible, and the general irregularities that will characterize the crystalline structure are beginning to show.
400 Park Avenue South will eventually rise 476 feet, making it a neighborhood stand-out given its relative prominence and likely excellent design. No glass has been installed yet, but mock-ups of the facade – posted on YIMBY this past March – were very promising. The tower is being developed by Toll Brothers, and will eventually house 365 residential units.
Rumors of taller buildings in the vicinity have been buzzing, and Ian Bruce Eichner is apparently set to build a new 800-foot tower just a few blocks south – a slew of new towers along Madison Square Park could certainly diminish the impact of 400 Park Avenue South, but it will likely remain an icon regardless.
