Demolition Update: 225 West 57th Street

Visible progress is being made at 225 West 57th Street, where the last buildings are now being deconstructed. Comparing today’s update with the previous photos, the former 225 West 57th has now lost three floors – a standard pace of demolition for an old building of its size, given the site’s extremely urban confines.

Although no news relating to the future Nordstrom Tower has been released in some time, patience is a virtue, and given demolition, plans are clearly progressing. Nearby, The New York Times reported that JDS’s skyscraper at 105 West 57th Street – which will now encompass the former Steinway Hall – will also rise over 1,000 feet in height.

The race is on all along 57th Street, though Extell should be the victor, given 225 West 57th’s 1.3 million square feet of air rights. With on-file permits indicating a height of 1,550 feet, the airspace along the thoroughfare will certainly become more crowded, but Barnett’s super scraper should still take the crown, with plenty of room to spare.
