Superstructure work is now complete at the Avalon West Chelsea, and the development’s thirty-one story tower component is now structurally complete. The massive 710-unit complex dominates the vicinity; though the tower is only thirty-odd floors, the building is incredibly large, and the lack of any significant neighbors leaves the development visually isolated.
The Avalon West Chelsea is just the first of several new buildings planned for the immediate vicinity, so this will not be an issue; indeed, new projects – including Zaha Hadid’s first foray in New York City – will eventually surround the development. As-is, it may seem oversized, but the eventuality of The High Line’s boom will integrate the Avalon West Chelsea into its surroundings quite well. The demure brick facade is typical for major market-rate projects of the Avalon’s size, and if New York had more 700-unit projects under construction, housing prices wouldn’t be so astronomical.
Cladding continues to rise, and the Avalon’s mid-rise component is now completely dressed, though the upper floors of the thirty-one story tower remain nude. Completion is anticipated for late 2014, though the building’s website indicates move-ins should begin later this year, which would be corroborated by the fact that the mid-rise is externally complete.
