A new sliver-building is about to begin rising at 132 West 26th Street, which has been an empty lot for several years. Initial plans were for a 19-story hotel called Greenhouse 26, but those have apparently fallen through; the latest permits indicate the structure will rise 12 floors and hold ten residences, which will rest above two levels of retail.
The block is on the fringe of NoMAD, and has seen a dramatic increase in value over the past decade; the switch from hotel to what will probably be ultra-expensive condominiums is another sign of the upwards trend in neighborhood real estate prices.
Permits indicate the developer is Jack Ancona, and the designer is Elemental Architects – though at 12 floors, 132 West 26th will barely be visible. A posted image on-site shows no details; given its massing and size, the only real architectural creativity could come with the facade, and even then, the lot is only 19 feet wide.
Completion of Greenhouse 26 was originally planned for the spring of 2008, but that deadline has clearly passed; with foundation work imminent, the building will be complete by the fall of 2014. Excavation is well underway, and foundation work should soon begin.

Curious if anything is known about this project’s current status. The construction site appears to be abandoned following a Stop Work order from the DOB in June of 2015.
