Construction Update: 99 Washington Street

Gene Kaufman’s 99 Washington Street has topped out, and it’s only going to get worse from here. The superstructure is bland enough, but it’s the cladding that’s sure to wow in terms of sheer awfulness; a dash of Pyongyang with a twist of Havana. It’s like Kaufman designed 99 Washington to keep with the ‘communist minimalist’ look that’s oh-so popular in despotic countries across the globe.

The tower is short enough–despite rising 500 feet–that you can barely see it from the World Trade Center, only a few blocks to the north. That’s one thing an evil dictator certainly wouldn’t be pleased about, as they seem to enjoy oversized objects.

Why bother settling for the epithet of world’s tallest Holiday Inn when you can strive for the title of ugliest as well?
