Rebuilt Two-Story Taxi & Limousine Commission Facility Proposed at 24-55 Brooklyn Queens Expressway West, Woodside

The New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission, with the Department of Design and Construction, is planning to rebuild their facility currently located at 24-55 Brooklyn Queens Expressway West, in northern Woodside. The plans call for renovating and expanding the existing single-story facility into a two-story structure, with the inspection garage on the ground floor and offices on the second, DNAinfo reported. The redeveloped building will also feature a parking garage, indoor and outdoor common areas, and green infrastructure. The current facility is in dire need of repairs because part of it was built on unstable ground. TEN Arquitectos is responsible for the design, and the city’s Public Design Commission is required to approve the project. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in August 2017, with completion in 2019.

Construction Wrapping on Three-Story, Elmhurst Public Library at 86-07 Broadway

Construction is finally wrapping up on the Queens Library’s reconstructed three-story, 30,515-square-foot Elmhurst branch at 86-07 Broadway (a.k.a. 86-01 51st Avenue), located two blocks north of the Grand Av-Newtown stop on the M/R trains. The building will open in the fall, once the interiors get completed and furnished, DNAinfo reported. The library will host study areas, classrooms, an assembly hall, and storage rooms. Construction began on the library back in 2012 and was initially expected to open a year later. Sandro Marpillero’s TriBeCa-based Marpillero Pollak Architects is behind the design. The city’s Department of Design and Construction is leading the project.

215th Street Pedestrian Staircase Opens Following Its Reconstruction, Inwood

The newly redesigned and constructed 215th Street staircase in Inwood – which connects pedestrians at Park Terrace East to Broadway and West 215th Street, sitting 50 feet below – is expected to open today after two years of construction. According to Curbed NY, WXY Studios designed the staircase, which is essentially being treated like public park space. The passageway features new vegetation, cobblestone paths, new stairs, and a bike channel. Two lampposts from the original staircase, built in 1911, were incorporated into the renovations since they’re designated city landmarks. The city’s Department of Design and Construction was behind the project.

561 St. Ann's Avenue

Reveal For Three-Story, 43,500 Square-Foot Police Station At 561 St. Ann’s Avenue, Mott Haven

The city’s Department of Design and Construction tasked the Bjarke Ingels Group to design a new three-story station for New York City Police Department’s 40th Precinct, and now the Architect’s Newspaper has the project’s reveal. The new station will be located at 561-585 St. Ann’s Avenue, currently a vacant parcel on the corner of East 149th Street, in Mott Haven. The 59-foot-tall facility will measure 43,500 square feet and will feature a central indoor atrium, a green roof, and a community meeting room. The project will also include the redesign of a triangular parking lot immediately to the north. Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects is leading the site design work. Completion is expected in 2020.
