The development boom that began to envelope the 57th Street corridor with One57’s rise is finally at peak frenzy. 220 Central Park South is nearing completion, 111 West 57th Street is being clad in its terra cotta and bronze facade, and the future 1,550-foot-tall 217 West 57th Street, aka Central Park Tower, is also seeing its exterior falling into place.
Now that 111 West 57th Street is above the floors complicated by the adjacent Steinway Building, which is being integrated into the base of the supertall, the future 1,428-foot-tall tower is shooting upwards. The latest photos of progress come from Streetscaper and Tectonic, and besides new floors being added on a weekly basis, the exterior of the tower is now receiving its terracotta and bronze facade.
One of many supertall buildings rising in Manhattan is about to mark a milestone, as the tower portion of 111 West 57th Street is about surpass the height of the landmarked Steinway Hall.
Back in 1974, developer Sheldon Solow built a 50-story office tower at 9 West 57th Street that featured a dramatic, sloping facade clad in dark glass. Now he plans to knock down a little office building next door at 7 West 57th Street, to make way for a 19-story residential building.
Last year, Michael Shvo and Russian billionaire Vladislav Doronin agreed to pay $500 million for 20 floors of the Crown Building at 730 Fifth Avenue, on the corner of 57th Street. Now Shvo has filed plans to convert most of the 26-story office building into condominiums and a hotel.
