New York City’s hospitals are struggling. St. Vincent’s Hospital in the West Village shut its doors in 2010 and sold most of its property to condo developers. Beth Israel Hospital is planning to close and sell off some of its buildings in the East Village, eventually demolishing the 825-bed hospital and developing a newer, smaller facility.
A deteriorating piece of Greenwich Village dating back to the time of President Andrew Jackson will be demolished. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved a proposal for a new building at 327 Bleecker Street.
A pair of condo buildings is set to replace two stories of retail and office space on a sleepy residential block in the West Village. New building applications were filed over the weekend to erect two connected six-story buildings at 703 Washington Street, on the corner of Perry Street and a block east of the West Side Highway.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission has weighed in on a new apartment building planned for 11-19 Jane Street, in the Greenwich Village Historic District. It appears the commissioners could support demolition of the site’s existing garage building, but not the proposal for its replacement.
