NoMad’s Skyline Lights Up With “Aurora” Atop 277 Fifth Avenue

For this year’s NYCxDesign, an annual celebration of art and design in all forms, developers Victor Group and Lendlease have commissioned renowned lighting designer Joel Fitzpatrick for a temporary installation at the pinnacle of 277 Fifth Avenue in NoMad. Designed by architect Rafael Viñoly, the 55-story residential tower, currently under construction, will temporarily illuminate the surrounding neighborhood in a gentle flurry of vibrant color.

The installation is titled Aurora and commemorates the inauguration of the “NoMad Design District,” described as Manhattan’s latest international design destination. The neighborhood is also host of the 2018 NYCxDesign event series set to launch on May 18th. Aurora will be on display for two weeks, from May 17th though the 31st, from dusk until 2 AM and again from 5AM to dawn.

“Aurora transforms the loggia and penthouse residences into a digital canvas of dynamic light that celebrates Rafael Viñoly’s iconic architecture in a new way,” said Melissa Román Burch, executive general manager at Lendlease. “We’re excited to celebrate NoMad as a center for design with this one-of-a-kind artwork during NYCxDesign.”

In December, YIMBY offered an exclusive tour of the property which has risen to a height of 728 feet, made possible by the acquisition of air rights from neighboring locations.

When fully complete, the building will offer sweeping, unobstructed views of the Flatiron building, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, Downtown Manhattan, Brooklyn, New Jersey, and both the East and Hudson Rivers.

The property topped-out in March, and only a few unfinished floors of exterior cladding remain until the facade will be complete.

“The juxtaposition of emulating a natural wonder in response to the ultimate metropolis of New York City has been an incredible experience,” said Aurora creator Joel Fitzpatrick. “I hope that viewers can interpret and respond to this work throughout the city and contextualize the monumental scale and proportions of Viñoly’s architecture with a new perspective at night.”
