Since the groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 4, 2018, NoMad’s future Ritz Carlton at 1185 Broadway has been making rapid progress. Excavation for the imminently 40-story and 580-foot-tall skyscraper has almost been finished, and rebar from the foundation walls is already poking up above street level. Designed by renowned architect Rafael Vinoly, MarriottRitz Carlton Hotels, and Flag Luxury Properties are the developers, while Yabu Pushelberg is the interior designer for the $500 million project.

A section of the foundation has also sprouted on the northern end of the site. Three excavators are quickly hauling out dirt simultaneously, as seen in the photo below.

The tower is being designed by Rafael Vinoly, and should prove another attractive addition to the ongoing redevelopment of NoMad. The area is undergoing a major transformation as the building boom of high-rise hotels and tall residential towers continues to make headway.

The renderings for the upcoming hotel show a strong emphasis on the dark grey-colored horizontal bands of concrete between each of the ribbon-glass windows. As rendered, every floor will be lined with a perimeter of landscaping and hanging plants to bring a touch of greenery above the streets of NoMad and Midtown. Reality is usually not quite so lush, however, the images do give some hope that this design component will be realized.

Aside from the huge green roof of the Jacob Javits Center, the only other upcoming skyscraper with a greater amount of landscaping is Bjarke Ingels Group’s 66 Hudson Boulevard, aka “The Spiral.” That project is set to have greenery on each of its stepped outdoor terraces that diagonally spiral around its exterior.

Turning back to NoMad’s impending Ritz Carlton, six white-colored, rectangular-shaped columns will rise along the southern elevation of the tower, continuing all the way to the top. A landscaped terrace with trees is shown in the rendering, with open-air views of the neighborhood and beyond. There will be a total of two outdoor terraces, with the second being near the bottom of the hotel, close to street level.

Two large sections of square-shaped metal panels will hide the mechanical equipment up top, and form part of the building’s flat crown and exterior facade just above the lower outdoor terrace.

The total scope of the project will yield about 150,000 square feet, and feature 250 guest rooms and sixteen residences. The amenities include a branded Ritz-Carlton Spa, a fitness center, bicycle parking and a rooftop bar. There will be restaurant with a bar on the ground floor for guests and the public.

Other nearby projects include 277 Fifth Avenue, 15 East 30th Street, 30 East 31st Street, 3 West 29th Street and possibly 262 Fifth Avenue. Richard Branson’s first New York City outpost for Virgin Hotels is also nearing completion just a few blocks to the north.

The Ritz Carlton NoMad is currently anticipated to open in late 2020 or 2021.
