City agencies have announced the development of an affordable housing project dedicated to low- and extremely low-income senior citizens in the Soundview section of The Bronx. Known as Casa Celina, it is a collaboration between NYCHA and the city’s department of Housing Preservation and Development with private entities Xenolith Partners, The Kretchmer Companies, ELH Mgmt., and the Jewish Association Serving the Aging, known colloquially as JASA.
Designed by Magnusson Architecture + Planning, the 16-story building will contain a total of 200 studio and one-bedroom units and a 3,350-square-foot community space at the ground level offering onsite social support, health services, and cultural programming. Residential amenities will include a fitness center, a landscaped roof terrace, communal lounge areas, and a laundry room.
“Urban acupuncture was a theme of the design,” said Magnusson Architect and Planning principal Fernando Villa. ‘There was an idea that this one point, this building, could radiate benefits throughout the neighborhood in the form of services and community programming, neighborhood investment, and architectural innovation, or more everyday impacts like improvements in open space and street illumination.”
Casa Celina is positioned on the corner of Watson and Thieriot Avenue, a NYCHA-owned site that is part of a larger collection of parcels named after Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. According to an official statement from the city, the development named the project after Justice Sotomayor’s mother Celina Baez.

Please pardon me for using your space: Dearest design so sum and grand total view from me. It’s beautiful and don’t be complicated. (Thank you)
Wow! This design is better than most of the new million dollar apartment projects being built. If only those 200 apartments could be 200,000 across the entire city.
No address…?
1001 Thieriot Ave
Glad to see such a nicely designed building, all the moreso for a non market-rate developement . IMO seniors and vets deserve the best design and site locations. Unrelated what is NYNIMBY’e revenue model for all of this daily amazing reporting?
This looks like it will be very nice, but this is a line of archispeak bullshit if I’ve ever seen one: “There was an idea that this one point, this building, could radiate benefits throughout the neighborhood in the form of services and community programming, neighborhood investment, and architectural innovation, or more everyday impacts like improvements in open space and street illumination.”
Its a beautiful building. I am interested in applying for the Casa Celina Low Income Seniors in the Bronx Apartments.
Mother Crawford building on Hoe ave in the Bronx. Is another unique nice color Los Angeles theme architecture. A site to to see when dull colors are so plentiful. Excellent job on design and color. Obviously she wants her mother to be remembered well. Maybe we should dedicate more buildings to mothers.
For those unaware, the NYCHA and HUD are currently wrapping up a 3rd building on what was a parking lot at the Soundview Houses, less than a mile south of this location. They came out great.
The NYCHA infill projects are doing wonders to improve these superblocks.

I’ve been high and low for a low income senior apartment with no luck. I am hoping that this will be the one. I pray everyday that I find one. Last year I was diagnosed with early Parkinson’ I couldn’t believe it. I am 67 years old. I’m hoping you could place me. I am currently staying with my son and his girlfriend in philly. Needless to say I need my own apartment and they need their privacy. I was born and raised in the south Bronx Patterson projects and praying to return to the Bronx. ASAP thank you.
