The famous Acme Smoked Fish Corporation is pursuing a major expansion of its existing facilities in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Located at 30 Gem Street, the Acme Smoked Fish factory was founded in 1905 and is now one of the country’s leading producers and distributors of smoked fish and pickled fish products by volume.

Designed by Gensler, the proposed scope of work includes the construction of approximately 532,000 square feet of office area, a 150-vehicle parking lot, loading docks, bicycle storage for commuting employees, and expanded processing facilities.

The new processing facilities will be located within a four-story structure at the northeastern corner of the property along Meserole Avenue and Banker Streets. There will be two new loading berths for the main processing facility with access from Meserole Avenue, and another three for the commercial building with access from Banker Street.

The office component will span nine stories and occupy the remainder of the block.

Rubenstein Partners, the private development firm selected by Acme to manage the expansion, has filed a request for zoning amendments with the New York City Department of Buildings to acquire necessary construction permits. Current zoning for the property only permits the development of about 233,500 square feet. The proposed expansion supersedes that limitation by more than twofold.

Pending approvals, construction is expected to last for approximately 45 months with completion and full occupancy expected by late 2024.

  1. Before any permit for expansion of the proessing facilities our representatives & legislators need to insist on an investigation as to how the odorous and noisy new faciities might negatively impact nearby residential areas.
Especially in Greenpoint, with it’s troubled history of industrial burdens, there needs to be a balance – and remedial actions or changes in the structure may be needed to minimize problems.

    • Respectfully, RELAX. ACME has been a longtime resident in the neighborhood pre-dating most of the current residential usage in the community. They’ve co-existed with the longtime residential community for a long time. In fact, this neighborhood was a forgotten land for many, many years. BKlyn, Greenpoint should be proud to have the nationwide gold standard of Smoked Fish produced within its borders (even Russ & Daughters sources from them). It would be a shame if baby strollers and gentrification hindered its expansion.
That said, any upzoning will be evaluated in extensive public (and political) reviews. There is a standardized process which this article does not suggest they are in any way trying to circumvent.

    • I’m a senior and Im in need if an apartment where can I apply for those affordable apartment

  2. Looks great..hope they include a take-out in the expansion!

  3. The triangular lot across the street on Whyte was recently vacated. Any word on future developments there?
