Foundation Walls Begin Formation for 487-Foot Starwood Hotel at 450 Eleventh Avenue in Hudson Yards

Excavation continues at the site of 450 Eleventh Avenue, while the first portions of the reinforced concrete foundation walls are beginning to form what will become a 487-foot-tall hotel from Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. Designed by DSM Design Group and developed by Marx Development Group, the project is located between West 36th and 37th Streets, directly across Eleventh Avenue from the Jacob K. Javits Center and just to the north of Related Companies’ Hudson Yards master plan.

Photos show a thick mesh of steel rebar vertically sticking upward along the eastern perimeter and excavators still going deeper below street level.

The lively design of the 531-room hotel is at once a departure from and a play on the architectural language of its surroundings. A deconstruction of the typical glass-box skyscraper, the structure resembles a stack of twisting Rubik’s Cubes imperfectly balanced atop one another. With multiple angled cuts and sloped edges in its glass curtain wall, the design also riffs on the gridlines and chamfered corners and edges of the Javits Center across the avenue to the west.

No construction timeframe has been announced. Excavation is likely to wrap up by the end of the year and foundation work should continue through the upcoming winter months. The superstructure could possibly be seen above street level within the first half of next year.

A completion date of fall 2022 for 450 Eleventh Avenue is posted on the construction fence.

  1. I really like how this design emphasizes the shaky foundations of our current construction boom.

Yep, it’s really a wonderful design and a fitting monument to our house of cards economy, at least for the 99%.

  2. Love this building &’always appreciate MY’s reporting & photos .

  3. There’s no longer a Starwood. It was acquired by Marriott a few years ago.

  4. Architectural vision of ‘a house of cards’..good stuff.

  5. I predict water infiltration

    • They’ve bituthene’d the exterior face of the foundation wall up pretty well, though I don’t know how they’ll flash between the bottom of the foundation wall and the undeveloped land on the lot to the south. You may be right!

  6. Yes @Bruce S
This is another Marriott as there is no more Starwood Hotels (only Starwood Capital existing)- which means lots of red, gold beige interiors. h
