Aloft Hotel at 132 West 28th Street Nears Topping Out in Chelsea

The reinforced concrete structure for the 203-room Aloft Hotel at 132 West 28th Street is close to topping out in Chelsea. Peter Poon Architects is the designer and Frank Ng is the developer of the 326-foot-tall, 32-story tower, which is located between Sixth Avenue and Seventh Avenue.

Photos show the bare reinforced concrete edifice approaching the upper levels before the setback on the northern elevation, which will form the flat roof parapet and the proposed 30th floor club space.

It looks like construction workers are currently forming the 30th floor and are two stories away from topping out. Meanwhile, the cinderblock walls are being formed and filling in the gaps between each floor slab along the flat western elevation. Installation of the glass curtain wall has not begun and may not start until workers reach the roof.

Amenities for hotel guests include a fitness center, a ground-floor bar and lounge, an outdoor terrace on the second floor, and a business center on the third floor. Aloft Hotels is expanding across New York City and currently has five locations. 132 West 28th Street, along with an additional establishment under construction at 50 Trinity Place in the Financial District will be the newest locations for the hotel chain. The Chelsea address is close to the 1 train at West 28th Street and Seventh Avenue, and the R and W trains to the east at the intersection with Broadway.

132 West 28th Street sits by the western border of NoMad, a neighborhood that has and still is undergoing an extraordinary transformation. An influx of hotels and residential towers are sprouting and reshaping the Midtown skyline below 34th Street and the Empire State Building. There is a lot of upcoming competition for hotel owners, and plenty more choices for tourists, visitors, and locals for dining, entertainment, and lodging.

A completion date of 132 West 28th Street has not been announced yet.

    A rather nice design.
Can anyone explain why these Manhattan mid-rise hotels are commonly setback from the street wall? I’m sure the setback allows a taller building, but why aren’t the lowest floors flush with the adjacent buildings? This doesn’t seem to happen with new office and apartment buildings.

  2. Because of the city DOB “sky-plane” code. Blame that. Also, a better architect would insist on a more substantial streetwall, but these budget hotel developers couldn’t care less, they are just doing what the city requires of them and nothing more and they are ruining street after street especially in the Garment District.

  3. I agree, at least have the 1st few floors flush with flanking buildings…

  4. ^ A better rule-of-thumb still would be match the height of flanking buildings, assuming flanking buildings are a least 6 stories high or so. These single story foyers are a goddamn travesty and these broken teeth streetwalls are going to be extremely difficult to repair through structure retrofit in the future. A possible solution would be vertical trellis type structures that do meet the streetwall in which greenery or other semi-translucent elements could be attached to.
