The new dome addition atop 44 Union Square, the former headquarters of Tammany Hall, is now fully enclosed in glass. The renovation and addition project is designed by BKSK Architects. Reading International (RDI) is the developer and Edifice Real Estate Partners is the owners representative. CNY Group is in charge of construction on the historic building, which overlooks Union Square.
Photos from Union Square show the dome fully enclosed in the geometric glass panels. Minor external work remains to be completed along the cornices, balustrades, and around the sidewalk, while interiors should be progressing. It will be nice to finally see the restored main entrance revealed after the sidewalk scaffolding comes down.
44 Union Square is a 90-year-old landmarked structure that is being expanded to 70,348 square feet with the addition of two elliptical-shaped reinforced concrete floors situated above the original roof parapet and within the confines of the space frame dome. Ceiling heights on the fifth floor range from 12 to 21 feet, while the sixth floor comes with a 19-foot-tall ceiling height and rises nearly 80 feet above street level. Tenants will be able to look down and across Union Square. Reading International purchased the building 18 years ago and helped advance the construction thanks to a $57.5 million construction loan that was secured from Bank of Ozarks and Fisher Brothers.
The 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q , R and W trains are all located across the street at the 14th Street-Union Square station. A Whole Foods Market sits at the southern end of the park, while a Trader Joe’s is slightly further to the east along 14th Street by Third Avenue.
A temporary certificate of occupancy is expected early in the second quarter of this year.

That only took a million years.
Just walked by this the other and the dome looks great. Some very lucky, important people will get to grace this space.
Yes, finally. They are not even done yet – just enclosed. Will take another decade
Can you tell me what is going up and how many floors at southwest corner of Third Avenue and 83rd St? Thanks.
I am confused: did I miss something, who is the tenant(s)? Is it Reading International, and if so, who are they, what do they do???
Good luck cooling this hothouse in the summer months. And who wants to sit there 8-9 hours a day working with glaring sunlight on everyone’s computer screens?
