200 Amsterdam Avenue’s Exterior Nears Completion, on the Upper West Side

Exterior work is nearing completion on 200 Amsterdam Avenue, the Upper West Side’s current tallest skyscraper and number 22 on our countdown of the tallest projects underway in the city. Designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects and developed by SJP Properties and Mitsui Fudosan America, the 668-foot-tall, 52-story structure will yield 283,000 square feet with interior design by CetraRuddy. The tower was the subject of intense NIMBY opposition earlier this year, culminating in a State Supreme Court ruling calling for a possible height reduction of 20 or more floors. However, the developers appealed the decision and construction continued as planned.

Recent photos from Central Park and the nearby streets show the glass and metal façade substantially finished, including work on the multiple balconies and glass railings that line the stepped eastern elevation. The only area awaiting completion is the façade on the slim southern profile, which is gradually being filled in where the exterior hoist was once attached. It’s likely that the interiors are not too far behind.

Not much has been disclosed regarding the count or breakdown of the residential units, however the amenities will include “The Spa at 200″ with a 75-foot-long indoor saltwater swimming pool and a mosaic-patterned whirlpool, a fitness center curated by The Wright Fit, a treatment room for facials and massages, a golf simulator, his and hers steam rooms, and a dog spa. “The Club at 200” will come with a 24-hour doorman and attended lobby with a live-in manager, a club room with a billiards table and bar, personalized concierge services, a children’s room called “The Little Composer’s Room,” storage, an outdoor terrace, a residential lounge for dining and entertaining, a study room, a library, and a soundproof music rehearsal room.

It’s likely that 200 Amsterdam Avenue will be completed sometime next year.

  1. Wow! That crown is just beautiful! And then how it ties with the rest of 200 Amsterdam with its beautiful glass and other little details. Come on, let’s forget about all this NIMBY garbage and just appreciate how spectacular 200 Amsterdam Avenue is. This is actually becoming one of my favorite new buildings in New York City. Really really nice.

  2. This is indeed a beautiful addition to the neighborhood. It is too bad that there were no pictures of the street level. I walk by it daily and it is gorgeous. I cannot wait to see it when they remove the sheds. A small minority of NIMBYs hate this building (“It’s blocking all of the sun!”, etc) but everyone else I speak to in the neighborhood loves it. People are more worried about 40 West 66th, since that is not so attractive, though stalled.

This is an interesting design. It’s like a stylized circuit board or stack of recording equipment. The top is nice, but it seems a bit heavy and unnecessarily tall. Perhaps the center should have been left more open like the historic double tower tops along Central Park West.

  4. Is 200 Amsterdam Avenue going to have any affordable housing apartments? I need one of them. Please, let me know.

  5. That is one stunning building! Wow! wow! wow! Who is the architect on this? The ground floor is absolutely amazing as well. Bravo!I would love to buy a unit but there is no information available. When are they going on sale?
