At number 22 on our year-end countdown is 450 Eleventh Avenue, a topped-out 642-foot-tall Aloft Hotel in Hudson Yards. Designed by DSM Design Group and developed by Marx Development Group, the slender 51-story reinforced concrete skyscraper will yield 379 guest rooms as well as a business center, a ballroom, and a fourth-floor restaurant and bar with an outdoor terrace overlooking the growing neighborhood. Atria Builders LLC is the general contractor for the Midtown, Manhattan property, which is located at the corner of West 37th Street and Eleventh Avenue, directly across from the Jacob K. Javits Center. The total construction cost is expected to be around $368 million.

Construction of the superstructure is practically done, with the safety cocoon netting and concrete formwork finishing up the framing of the outer walls across the roof parapet. The southern and eastern elevations have been left as blank concrete walls, but will likely be obscured by equally tall buildings in the future.

Little progress has been made on the curtain wall except for the sliver of the ground-floor panels currently in place, though metal clips on the edges of the podium floor plates along the western side of the building signal imminent activity. Above this, the main tower features numerous angled corners and cuts in its massing, which will produce a lively façade.

This design feature is carried over from the original rendering, which showed a much more dynamic geometry. Nonetheless, this aspect of the exterior will distinguish the tower from its more conventionally structured glass neighbors.

450 Eleventh Avenue is scheduled to be finished in 2023, as noted on the construction fence.

The backside is a brutalist sculpture.

  3. Why no windows on two sides of the building?

  4. whats with the L shape with no windows in the back?? thats a waste of space. also that would’ve been where the city views could be enjoyed

  5. This thing is taking forever. I’m thinking that it has supply chain issues or there is some other issue going on. Glass hasn’t gone up past the first floor for weeks now.

  6. Its likely for a fresh air egress when another tower is built right to the lot line.

  7. I’m still waiting for the glass to go up.

  8. Best building from an Upper West Side view with a million sparkling construction lights. Wish it could stay- as is- with its lights all ablaze.

  9. Construction on this building is defintely stalled. The tower crane is still attached. They started placing the curtain wall in December – just did the 1st and perhaps up to the 2nd floor. There has been no further progress since that time. There is never any activity on the site. Wondering if this is a financing issue or supply issue?

  10. Haven’t seen the elevator, crane or anything move for 6+ months … And still no glass curtain… feels like someone is having some issues closing the budget…

Still stalled. Construction lights are on but no movement at all.

  12. This project is about to get double-fcked. DOB is going to suspend the architect, Schiffman, for practicing w/o a license.
