Caton Flats, a new 14-story affordable housing property in Brooklyn, is now the new home of the Flatbush Central Caribbean Marketplace. Located at 2123 Caton Avenue in Flatbush, the marketplace formerly existed as Flatbush Caton Market and was a neighborhood staple for more than 20 years.

Flatbush Central’s rebrand was driven by The Honorable Dr. Una S.T. Clarke, a former New York City Councilmember who sought to build an institution for Caribbean people in Flatbush through the incubation of Caribbean businesses. Today, the marketplace offers a Caribbean food hall, a shared commercial kitchen, a bar and lounge, and affordable opportunities for small, independent business owners.

The development team includes BRP Companies, which also led the Caton Flats residential project, the New York City Economic Development Corporation, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), and Urbane.

“I am delighted to see my vision fulfilled, that vendors and entrepreneurs from our community now have a permanent home that gives both pride and dignity to those who struggled for existence and recognition,” said Dr. Una Clarke. “The name of the new site—Flatbush Central Caribbean Marketplace—is fitting because it acknowledges the contribution that Caribbeans have made to Flatbush and East Flatbush.”

In addition to the marketplace, Caton Flats comprises more that 220,000 square feet of residential area. This includes 255 affordable housing units and a mix of indoor-outdoor amenity spaces. Additional components include a 5,000-square-foot community facility that serves as the Caribbean Trade Center, owned and operated by Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“Small, local vendors like the ones returning to Flatbush Central are part of what makes Brooklyn so unique,” said Brooklyn borough president Antonio Reynoso. “I’m excited to see them in a new, permanent home that celebrates Caribbean culture and will also have incubator space to support new small businesses
