The Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center has revealed plans to construct a $118 million facility for young adults on its expanding White Plains medical campus. Located near the intersection of North Street and White Plains Avenue, the development site comprises around 23 acres and was once home to St. Agnes Hospital. The site currently includes a number of facilities, including The Bristal at White Plains, an assisted living and memory care facility.

Renderings of the facility show by E4H Environments for Health Architecture depict a five-story brick building with white and gray cladding at the base and corners of the structure. Within, the building will comprise 111,000 square feet and include 96 beds for medically fragile young adults aged 18 to 35 years old, a courtyard, and rooftop gardens.

“Elizabeth Seton cares for 169 children and now young adults with some of the most severe medically complex conditions and diagnoses, many from birth, and many can be genetic disorders,” said Patricia Tursi, Elizabeth Seton Children’s CEO in a report from Westfair Business Publications. “Most of our kids are in wheelchairs, strollers if very young, and graduate and continue to have their independence through their mobility devices.”

In addition to new patients, the facility will also serve as a care destination for young adults who age out of the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center, but still require specialty medical and support services.

“Over time what we started to see is that our children were living longer,” said Tursi. “For the first time we started to discharge our children as young adults. About 30 percent of them passed away in just a little over a year after discharge. Our staff was very, very concerned and upset.”

Before construction can begin, city officials will need to approve a proposed zoning map amendments that establishes a Planned Healthcare Campus Development District. The site is currently zoned as a Planned Senior Residential Development District.

If approved, the development is expected to create 300 full-time jobs, including 150 jobs for nurses.
