Construction is progressing on 341 West 38th Street, a 19-story residential building in the Garment District of Midtown, Manhattan. Designed by Stephen B. Jacobs Group and developed by Central Properties LLC, the project consists of the renovation and vertical expansion of an existing 12-story structure and the construction of a new addition on the narrow parcel to its east. The combined building will stand 212 feet tall and yield 112 units spread across 82,000 square feet, as well as a 7,300-square-foot cellar level. KSF Services is the general contractor for the property, which is located between Eighth and Ninth Avenues.
Recent photos show the building covered in scaffolding and black netting as façade restoration and interior overhaul work progresses. Above, the new reinforced concrete superstructure of the extension can be seen angling away from street level. This form continues to the east, creating a unified massing with the upper levels of the new extension. Based on the pace of progress, construction could top out by late spring or early summer.
The rendering posted on site shows the new structure aligned with the levels of the existing building to its west, with a grid of taller windows with matching white mullions. The sloped upper levels of the new building are shown to extend beyond the extension on the old edifice, which appears to have a terrace space cantilevering toward the street above the 14th floor. The new structure and extension are both clad in what appears to be copper paneling.
Below is a Google Street View of the conditions before construction began. The site of the new building was formerly occupied by a one-story structure that was demolished in 2021.
341 West 38th Street’s completion date is posted on site for this upcoming December, though sometime in the first half of 2024 is more likely.
