Foundations Near Completion for 31-Story Hotel at 32 West 48th Street in Midtown, Manhattan

Foundation work is nearing completion at 32 West 48th Street, the site of an upcoming 31-story hotel tower in Midtown, Manhattan’s Diamond District. Designed by SLCE Architects and developed by Extell, the 456-foot-tall structure will yield 213,158 square feet with 534 guest rooms. AECOM Tishman is the general contractor for the project, which is located between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, directly south of Rockefeller Center.

Crews were still assembling large perimeter sections of the reinforced concrete foundation walls in our last update at the beginning of the year. This process has since been completed, with work now shifting to the task of building up the inner columns and walls of the structure before reaching street level.

YIMBY previously reported that the hotel component of 32 West 48th Street will span 168,897 square feet with each guest room averaging around 316 square feet. The main rendering depicts the northern elevation of the hotel with a multi-story podium and sidewalk canopy along West 48th Street, followed by a setback and a minor cantilever on the western side of the tower. The entire building will be clad in floor-to-ceiling glass framed by light-colored mullions on the podium and a darker set for the rest of the tower above. Rooms facing north will provide guests with views of Rockefeller Center, while rooms on the upper levels of the opposite southern side will get views of the Empire State Building.

The closest subways from the property are the B, D, F, and M trains at the 47-50 Streets-Rockefeller Center station.

32 West 48th Street’s anticipated completion date is posted on site for September 2024. A hotel operator has yet to be confirmed.

  1. I usually loathe any setback tower but in this case I really don’t mind it because the two old flanking walkups are also setback from the sidewalk line and will provide air space on either side instead of the visual garbage of a setback tower pressed right up against a lot line wall with bricked up windows. Its also likely the cantilever will be barely visible from the street.

    • Yes, the old buildings on either side serve almost as bookends to the base of the new hotel. Their facades are amazingly well preserved on the upper floors. Wouldn’t it be nice if they could someday be restored to lend some old New York City charm to this fairly bland assemblage?

Until the tower can stand upright the foundation must be poured to be very strong, with this spacious concrete courtyard. So let’s go to the end of progress since works have begun, and standing on a 30-story building my legs are shaking. A darker set is arising from beautiful indeed it is a hotel: Thanks to Michael Young.
