Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the opening of Maspeth Park, a $17.8 million project in Queens. This new facility is the first of its kind in the western part of Maspeth, located near the Kosciuszko Bridge at the intersection of 43rd Street and 54th Road. It is accessible from both the Sunnyside and West Maspeth neighborhoods.

The park features various amenities including game and picnic tables, a basketball court, adult fitness equipment, and a skatepark with professional lighting for evening use. The basketball court also has nighttime lighting and bleacher seating for hosting events, managed by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.

The park spans nearly one acre on a formerly underdeveloped piece of land used during the construction of the Kosciuszko Bridge. Additional improvements include new sidewalks leading to the bridge’s bicycle and pedestrian path, which connects to Brooklyn’s greenway.

The park’s infrastructure now has LED lighting, public restrooms, and a maintenance driveway. A new building, housing NYCDPR’s district operations, has been constructed with a green roof for better energy efficiency and air quality.

Maspeth Park fulfills important recreational needs of the area. “This milestone is another step towards building a better New York and improving connectivity between boroughs,” Hochul said. The park opened on October 7, 2023.

The bridge opened over 6 years ago, so I’m guessing that’s how long the Parks Department dragged their feet to eventually build it. Lots of union people to pay off.

  3. What are you talking about lol
What is union has to with project like this ,it’s corrupt city and state officials that drag theirs feet or should I say have to stuff theirs pockets first then give crumbs to regular ppl .

  4. Apparently no one in Governor Hochul’s office in Albany or in the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation took the time to research or understand the history of this area at 43rd Street and 54th Road which has always been known as Laurel Hill and not Maspeth .. The park should be renamed to properly reflect the geographic area . The Community Board which represents the residents should be ashamed for allowing a incorrect naming of this project.
