Construction has topped out on Halo 1, the shortest structure in a three-tower skyscraper development at 289-301 Washington Street in Newark, New Jersey. Designed by INOA Architecture and developed by Acier Holdings, the project will feature 42-, 52, and 53-story volumes standing between 454 and 573 feet tall, which will earn it the distinction of the tallest building in Newark. When complete, the development will yield 1,075 total apartments in a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom layouts, as well as a suite of amenities and a 343-vehicle parking garage. The property is located along Washington Street between Branford Place and William Street, on the southwestern edge of the city’s downtown.

The following construction photo shows the reinforced concrete superstructure built to its pinnacle with progress on the glass curtain wall visible on the lower floors. An American flag flying at the peak of the bulkhead signals the completion of structural work.

The renderings in the main photo and below depict Halo 1 on the right side of the development, separated by a narrow gap from the second phase, which will consist of the 52- and 53-story structures. All three buildings feature sleek glass envelopes punctuated by angular cutouts that complement the look of the alternating slopes of their parapets.

Amenities will include a pool, coworking space, and fitness center.

The development is located in close proximity to numerous public transit options, with stops for the 5, 11, 28, 29, 66, and 70 bus lines steps from its front doors. Beyond that, Newark Penn Station, which services additional buses, NJ Transit train lines, and the PATH train, is an 18-minute walk to the east.

Halo 1 is scheduled to complete construction by the end of 2024.

Not exactly my favorite design, and of course 343 parking spaces is really dumb. But I am glad to see Newark getting some Yimby Love.

  4. Really love the design, and at least the tower has a soul and that’s good. It’s honestly the best thing that happen in our Downtown. I love seeing it every morning going to school and work. Also the other two towers are not 52 or 53 stories. The developers got phase 2 towers height increased. So tower 2 will be 619ft and tower 3 will be 587ft. So 57 and 58 stories. Hope they break ground next falll!!!!!!!

  5. I like the design and would support more if this eclectic. architecture in downtown Newark.
