Excavation is underway for The Moon 27, a nine-story mixed-use building at 42-38 27th Street in Long Island City, Queens. Designed by Michael Kang Architect and developed by Hang Dong Zhang, the 50,706-square-foot structure will yield 56 residential units with an average scope of 685 square feet, as well as 12,334 square feet of commercial space, a cellar level, and a 30-foot-long rear yard. BS LIC Realty LLC is listed as the owner of the property, which is bound by 42nd Road to the northeast, Crescent Avenue to the northwest, and 27th Street to the southeast.

Recent photographs show the whole parcel cleared and a pair of excavators beginning to dig up the site behind the sidewalk fencing. Steel pilings and temporary wooden walls hold up the unearthed sections of the perimeter, and YIMBY expects foundations to begin formation in the coming months and the superstructure to emerge by the end of the year.

The below rendering was posted on the construction board showing the building clad in a dark façade composed of metal paneling and floor-to-ceiling windows. There are multiple stacks of balconies lined with glass railings and a setback at the eighth story that appears topped with an expansive terrace. The ground floor features tall windows for the retail frontage and the main residential entrance is located on 27th Street beneath a canopy.

The nearest subways from the property are the N, W, and 7 trains at the elevated Queensboro Plaza station to the northeast.

The Moon 27 at 42-38 27th Street’s anticipated completion date is slated for winter 2025, as noted on site.

  1. Does anyone have any more detail on if they were effectively able to drill through the bedrock? I recall they’ve been drilling and breaking up stone for almost 2 years now. Are they past this?

    • No, they are still going. I live near by. It’s relentless, all day long noise. A handful of people on the site. A few wheelbarrows a day broken up. It’s criminal. They don’t even look close.

  2. The area looks about as hospitable to human life as the moon.

The bedrock in that area could be as much as 100 feet below the surface. In Flushing, it is more than 1,000 feet down.

Excavators should be able to overcome the hard rock layer, as the name on The Moon 27: Thanks.
