Construction is nearing completion on 1730 Bedford Avenue, a seven-story mixed-use complex in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Designed by Rise Architecture for the 1730 Bedford Realty LLC, the structure will yield 57 rental units with an average scope of 684 square feet, including 18 apartments reserved for affordable housing. The building will also contain a 33,000-square-foot Lidl grocery store, 12,000 square feet of office space, a 13,501-square-foot community facility, parking for 169 vehicles, and a loading berth. The property is bound by Sullivan Place to the north, Empire Boulevard to the south, and Bedford Avenue to the east.

The structure stands nearly fully clad in its beige brick façade, which surrounds broad ribbon windows with protruding trim on the four-story commercial component. The taller residential section at the northern end of the complex features the same façade, but with floor-to-ceiling windows and doors opening to balconies. The residential structure also features numerous setbacks lined with metal railings for terraces. Work is still finishing up on the interiors and on the ground floor of the entire complex.

The following photos captured workers removing scaffolding and lifting equipment to the flat roof parapet.

The below rendering shows an outdated design iteration for 1730 Bedford Avenue featuring a glass curtain wall for the commercial volume, which would have also stood as tall as the residential component.

The nearest subways from the development are the B, Q, and S trains at the Prospect Park station and the 2 and 5 trains at the Nostrand Avenue station.

1730 Bedford Avenue was initially slated for completion in summer 2023, but sometime this summer is likely.

  1. The original rendering was better.

  2. Nice brickwork

The larger original design was neat but I think the actual building looks good. It has a sort of art deco design with the long windows that stretch the entire length of the building. Reminds me of some older department stores.

  4. It’s a shame the politics of developing the Empire Boulevard corridor are so fraught.

The ’50s have returned, and the redesign is better than the original glass box.
And yay for Lidl which proves, along with Trader Joe’s, that US grocery corporations are greedy destroyers of democracy.

  6. Lidl grocery store, office space, and a community facility. The blend of market-rate and affordable housing units, along with ample parking and a loading berth, makes it a well-thought-out project. The location is also quite strategic, bound by major streets. It’s going to be interesting to see how it impacts the community once it’s fully operational!

What a transformation! This is so beautiful. Could wait to see how it would look like. I’d love to get an apartment there. Can’t wait for the Lidl to open we really need it.

  8. Wonderful mixed use project and something very useful for the neighborhood with Lidl 👍

This leaves me stumped. How could such a location hold a flagship. Is not some exclusive address, for instance in Paris the flagship. I can only guess flagship now has a new marketing definition.
