Permits have been filed for an eight-story homeless shelter at 1605 Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island, Brooklyn. Located between West 16th Street and West 17th Street, the lot is three blocks west of the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station, served by the D, F, N, and Q trains. Gunnveet Sandhu is listed as the owner behind the applications.
The proposed 80-foot-tall development will yield 28,772 square feet designated for community facility space. The building will have 160 beds and a supportive housing program sponsored by the Department of Health Services. The concrete-based structure will also have a cellar and a 35-foot-long rear yard.
Michael Kang Architect is listed as the architect of record.
Demolition permits will likely not be needed as the lot is vacant. An estimated completion date has not been announced.
