Permits have been filed for a seven-story homeless shelter at 6530 4th Avenue in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Located between 65th Street and Shore Road, the lot is near the Bay Ridge Avenue subway station, served by the R train. Shia Mendel is listed as the owner behind the applications.
The proposed 80-foot-tall development will yield 8,915 square feet designated for community facility space. The masonry-based structure will also have two cellar levels and a 30-foot-long rear yard.
Hayk Arustamyan of Gate211 Architecture is listed as the architect of record.
Demolition permits were filed in February for the single-story structure on the site. An estimated completion date has not been announced.

Glad to hear we’re helping those who need the most help.
No mention of the size of the project or how many beds.
Isn’t that close to a school? Aren’t things like this not per.itt3d close to schools?
How is across the street from a high school permitted??
this will be close to two schools. not acceptable
Four schools will be within walking distance from this place. This is ridiculous.
Like to have sufficient shelter provided to those in need. The concern is for people engaged in unpopular behaviors during daylight hours in the neighborhood. Needs some sort of reduction in this possible scenario.
Not only is it close to a school it’s close to 4 schools. Across the street from a high-school, telecommunications and accross the street from an elementary school PS 907k the other 2 schools are 2 blocks away. The bustop for the schools is directly in FRONT of the homeless shelter. The 2 churches across the street I guess don’t mean anything either, as long as you contribute to your connected progressive politician who care nothing about children’s safety
You think a CHURCH would be against helping the homeless?
Hopefully this facility will help a lot of needy people. Bay Ridge has a horrible attitude against those less fortunate. I can only imagine the protests that are going to happen. BTW Homeless people are most often kind and good people just down on their luck.
Why don’t you invite those kind people in your home? Give me your address I will kindly bring thwm ovwr
Perhaps the reason you perceive Bay Ridge as having a ‘horrible attitude’ is because we are left out of the review process, as is the case here. Also your claim that it is against the less fortunate is FALSE. Bay Ridge is home to numerous charitable organizations that Bay Ridge residents support and fund. Maybe if you actually looked around Bay Ridge you would see this, it you even live here.
Who allowed this? It’s literally in a high traffic area with access to the Belt, and it’s ACROSS THE STREET from a high school, and is a bus stop for others. Like what?! I hope the community gets this one shut down. Why wasn’t the community informed before permits were given?
Community facility space … you mean a shelter for noone who lives in the community. Meanwhile Justin Brennan is getting his pals deals while he lines his pockets its not right
Just because a person is homeless doesn’t make them a criminal! Disgusting how all of these so called Christian people are going against their so called lord and savior’s teachings. 🤔
How do you know the people complaining are Christians ? Might be atheists or a host of other religions. A homeless shelter is never a shining star in a neighborhood. Can’t fault people for being wary/unhappy about it
This facility is not for homeless families it’s designated as SRO meaning single room occupancy for men. To sell it to the Community justin beanan D said it’s for single military men and that too is a Fib as that isn’t in any of the declarations. There’s more safety if It was family’s but 170 single men will come with many bad habits and mental issues which is why they’re homeless in the first place. This facility isn’t for them to live its only to sleep so they must leave in the morning roam the streets and return on a first come first serve basis by 730pm if they miss that dealine they’ll find refuge in near by building stairwells.
Dave barrett. How about we put it in your neighborhood. There are 4 schools within 5 blocks. Why not put it in a neighborhood where these homeless come from. And with no public hearings.
This is a good location for homeless families. Glad that people who are in need down here will have support.
Let’s lure skells into our neighborhood and put them near a school! David Barrett says we have a “horrible attitude toward the less fortunate”. No David we wish them well and hope they land on their feet but when you have pride and care for your neighborhood and the inhabitants and your property value you don’t put up welcome signs for the dregs of society to come join. It’s ok the progressives and hipsters who moved here from Vermont and Seattle with their parents money will get what they want and ruin yet another neighborhood but be the first in shock when they are robbed by one of these angels.
I’m reading all these stupid and nasty comments did one mention there is a police precinct right around the corner to deal with whatever issues may arise from this and how anour while they are at it budget in the salary for 30-50 officers to be stationed at that precinct with the priority to police this area of all the” horrible “ people that this would help achieve a better life while you idiots type away with a roof over your heads and good to ear and a bed to sleep
This location is right next to the entrance to the Belt Parkway. Hopefully some of the homeless who are already living under the 3rd avenue overpass and the tent encampment in the park adjacent to telecommunications high school will be some of the first residents. Let me be the first to point out that just around the corner from this location at is the 68th precinct at 333 65 st. It is the commanding officers responsibility to have officers monitor the location. Or would you be satisfied with the homeless already living alongside the highway and the freight tracks keep their current place of residence out in the open.
I hope they have the necessary support systems in place to help those individuals transition back into society.
The reality is most, not all, but most homelessness is due to drug addiction. I think only those who have been around it can understand
This is close to two schools and a senior center. Not gonna happen.
This is crazy! Not only is this near 5 schools but it’s across the street to a children’s small playground !! The homeless will be sitting in it all day and it’s already crowded with mothers and children!! Not safe at all!!
Seems like a 7 story building might have some permanent living quarters/rooms/studios for homeless vets, instead of just another place to get them off the street at night and force them into the streets during the day. And maybe an on-site drug rehab program? And a large rec room to hang out in and watch tv, read, etc. during the day? I mean, an actual place to live for the homeless?
Let’s have an honest dialogue. Homeless shelters are NEVER a facility that ANY neighborhood or community wants to voluntarily locate within their boundaries – yet they are a necessity – homeless people need to have temporary housing until they can be transitioned to permanent housing.
With that said the first rule of thumb should be that every borough should house the homeless from their borough of origin in this manner no one borough should be overburdened by these facilities.
A second rule should be that these facilities should be at least a “good” distance away from elementary schools – what is a “good” distance that can be debated.
Third and perhaps most importantly they should be run in an efficient manner. There really wouldn’t be much opposition if these facilities had rules in place that the residents would have to follow, in particularly no loitering in and around the exterior of the facility.
Food for thought.
Who would’ve though a homeless shelter would be such a lightning rod?
As usual, rammed down the throats of Bay Ridgeites without prior notification or review, thanks to our local politicians who don’t want to discuss. Can you blame BR for being angry with no say in the matter? Bring residents to the table, or expect pushback… its called respect and common courtesy, something the proponents are quite ignorant of. NO homeless shelter here!
Bay Ridge doesn’t have a homeless problem why do we get a shelter ? NO ONE from our community will be housed there , you know it and I know it
They messed up on the demolition permits because they destroyed the structure months before they were awarded a permit.
Mr. Justin Brannan and his pals destroying our neighborhood in bay ridge. We the taxpayers need to defend the fort.
People stop it’s not for families, it’s for SINGLE homeless men. They must spend the day in the streets, they must be at the facility by a set hour in the evening and leave in the morning. As a single male they’ll get $100 in foodstamps for the money which is why they commit petty crimes. Maybe they can chat it up with preschoolers to left at ps.917k or highschoolers to the right Telecommunications H.S
Our poor children. There are too many schools around the area and too many old timers that are retired that live near by. I guess when they finish preying on the children then can then prey on the elders this way it would not be discrimination. I hope its the elders and the children of all those involved with this project and not the usual innocent poor souls.
You got what you vote…
Continue vote Democrat and you see new york go down and down ..
I remember when bayridge was full of Irish Norway Greeks…..community was safer all that nice restaurant around us ….very sad
Minority born and raised in Sunset Park during the 80’s as a kid. Bay Ridge was always looked at as an upgrade to peaceful living in Brooklyn. I now live in Bay Ridge for several years and have loved it. That being said, i knew it was a matter of time before Liberals destroyed this neighborhood with their indoctrinated cult ideas of anarchy. All of these transplants from the Midwest are on a mission to destroy anything that was once good in NYC. In 2 years i’ll be leaving NYC behind as i no longer recognize it.
