The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development has announced plans for an affordable housing and community workforce development hub at 153 Nevins Street in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. Designed by Magnusson Architecture and Planning and developed by Brooklyn-based non-profit Fifth Avenue Committee, the project will deliver approximately 70 affordable, rent-stabilized homes. The property is currently occupied by a city-owned parking lot is located at the corner of Nevins and Wyckoff Streets.
The project includes a partnership with Brooklyn Workforce Innovations, an FAC affiliate, which will occupy about 3,000 square feet of community facility space within the building. BWI will use the space to expand workforce training programs in Boerum Hill, including job readiness courses and hands-on training. The organization will also provide locally manufactured sustainable cabinets and millwork for the project, employing graduates of its Brooklyn Woods woodworking program. Approximately 21 units will be reserved for formerly homeless families and individuals, with the remainder available through the NYC Housing Lottery.
Planned amenities include an exercise room, laundry facilities, bike storage, and outdoor play and seating areas. A large community room opening onto a landscaped courtyard will be available for residents, along with an emergency generator to provide backup power for critical services.
