Demolition is nearing completion at 199 North 5th Street, the site of a five-story residential building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Designed by Asher Hershkowitz and developed by Idan Shitrit of Investmates, the structure will span 11,350 square feet and yield 13 rental units with an average scope of 873 square feet. The project will also include a cellar level and a 39-foot-long rear yard. The 17,000-square-foot property is located between Driggs Avenue and Roebling Street.

The church that formerly occupied the site is nearly fully razed, with only its red brick base remaining behind the sidewalk fencing. Temporary wooden braces hold up the eastern side of the first-story wall as crews finish dismantling it. Demolition is expected to finish in September, as noted on the info board.

The church building certainly looked ”quaint”. Does anyone know it’s history? Was is always an evangelical Protestant sect serving the once much larger Hispanic community …or does the building have deeper roots in our earlier history as a City? The pastor and/or the denomination sure hit the jackpot, with a good sized lot in now oh-so trendy Wiliamsburg. The Lord & the soulless evil of Rampant Gentrification sure do work in mysterious ways. Somewhere along the line we switched from driving the money-changers, thieves & greed developers from out of the Temple into exactly the opposite …Heaven help us. Where did you put that Kool Aid brother? I think I’m a feeling like taking a sip

  3. The borough of churches soon it will be the borough of no churches. A lot have been demolished. It’s sad situation.
