An updated design has been revealed for 829 Bergen Avenue, an 11-story residential building planned for Journal Square, Jersey City. Designed by Emara Ghobrial Architects and developed by Tayfun Selen, the structure was recently approved by the Jersey City Planning Board and will yield 77 rental units, with eight dedicated to affordable housing. The project will also include 1,105 square feet of ground-floor retail space. The property is located between Vroom Street and Highland Avenue.

The new rendering above showcases a slightly simplified design compared to the previous iteration below from MVMK Architecture + Design. The angled wall at the northern end of the main eastern face will no longer extend below the second tier of the building, and the cutout balconies have been removed in favor of a consistent square window grid. Bronze-hued cladding will span the width of the structure between every floor, with white columns between the windows. The glass railings atop the setbacks will be retained. The southern lot line wall appears completely blank, and a bulkhead extension is visible toward the back of the lot.

Demolition has yet to begin on the current low-rise occupant of the property, as seen in the following Google Street View image between the Saint George & Saint Shenouda Coptic Orthodox Church and a six-story apartment building called The Madrid at 821 Bergen Avenue.

Amenities will include a 2,000-square-foot green roof and 41 bike storage spaces. On-site parking was initially proposed for the project but was eliminated from the current plan. Four additional affordable housing units were included as compensation.

The site is a short walk southwest of the Journal Square PATH station.

A construction timeline for 829 Bergen Avenue has yet to be announced.

  1. The original was much nicer. Now looks like a Holiday Inn.

  2. Looks like it’s about to be attacked by a flock of birds..

  3. Wow, what a downgrade from the original proposal.
