A rendering has been revealed for the Montclair Veterans Service Center, a four-story mixed-use residential building at 210 Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, New Jersey. Designed by DIGroup Architecture, the structure will house the Crawford Crews American Legion Post 251, which has supported African American veterans on the site since 1935. The project will yield 11 supportive units as well as spaces for veteran services and community engagement. The property is located between Elm and Hartley Streets.
The rendering previews a rectangular massing, with glass and light gray stone cladding much of the first story as well as a portion of the second level on the main northeast elevation. The northwest corner will be enclosed in light gray brick and will support a flagpole, while the rest of the residential floors will feature a charcoal-hued brick envelope. The main doors will sit within an arched stone entryway.
The following Google Street View image shows the current state of the American Legion Post 251 structure. The building was constructed in the 1880s in the Italian Renaissance style and originally housed the Washington Hose Company No. 3. The chapter house is named in honor of Crawford Crews, a former Montclair resident who served in the Harlem Hellfighters all-Black infantry unit during World War I. Many of the structure’s original architectural materials are planned to be incorporated into the new building.

The site is a short walk from the Bay Street NJ Transit train station.
The project has secured pre-development funding from the State of New Jersey and support from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as zoning approvals and housing voucher allocations. A construction timeline for 210 Bloomfield Avenue has yet to be announced.
